Regions of Italy

When talking about Italian food, you can never escape some of the basic food products typical to the cuisine. Many of these are available in most, if not all, the regions of Italy. Some examples of these are grains such as riso (rice) and farro, ground corn locally called polenta, spices like onions and pepper, and herbs such as basil, oregano and sage. Of course, you can’t forget about one of the most diverse Italian food, pasta. And lastly, the most popular Italian food, and one that people outside the Italian peninsula most associate with the country… pizza.

But Italian cuisine is not just about pizza, pasta, spices and herbs. Actually, it is more diverse than most, with different regions of Italy having their own traditional dishes, each with its own origin stories and a slew of influences behind it. Most regions even have one or two pasta types that are unique to their area.

More than those culinary characteristics mentioned above, however, is the use of high quality fresh ingredients in every dish. This is why there are Italian dishes that are typically prepared only in a particular area or during specific seasons. Coastal areas usually have a lot of seafood dishes, plains have meat-based dishes from livestock, and mountainous areas have dishes with game meat and dried or preserved ingredients.
