Italian Sodas

Italian sodas are the perfect beverage to serve for all kinds of occasions, or just to quench your thirst on a hot summer’s day. Refreshing concoctions made with carbonated water and flavored syrups (and sometimes, also cream), Italian sodas usually come in fruity flavors, but may also have flavors of spices, desserts, or other beverages. Among the popular flavors around are Strawberry, Raspberry, Coconut, Caramel, Hazelnut, Amaretto, Vanilla, and of course, Chocolate.

The flavored syrup recipes said to be responsible for the introduction of Italian sodas in the US come from the city of Lucca in the Tuscany region. Allegedly, a family of Italian immigrants from Lucca brought flavored syrups to the city of San Francisco in the year 1925. They then mixed the syrups with sparkling soda water and introduced these concoctions to local cafes. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Italian sodas can be mixed at home or bought already mixed from supermarkets. Mixing your own can be suitable for occasions when you want costume-made drinks. However, if you’re pressed for time, you can opt for ready-made ones that usually come in bottles. Not only are they more convenient, they can also be quite a festive addition to your dinner table because they come in a variety of bright summer colors.
