What is Sea Salt?

You may have heard or read the term “sea salt” so many times in connection to condiments or seasonings that are available in the market today. And you may be expecting more than its name implies. But in reality, it is as its name suggests. Simply, it is salt that comes from the sea.

Salt is a crystalline compound technically called sodium chloride. It can be found in the seas, oceans, and underground sea beds and domes. It can either be mined underground or harvested from the sea.

Salt that comes from salt mines are brought from underground caverns, much like other minerals. Once extracted from underground, it is then sent to a salt plant for evaporation. But aside from simply letting the water evaporate, however, the salt also undergoes a refining which removes the minerals in it. This is where most table salt come from.

Harvesting salt from the sea, on the other hand, is often a more rustic process. In fact, historians believe that harvesting salt through solar evaporation has been around since prehistoric times. How do people get the salt this way? Saltwater is trapped in shallow pools by the sea and then the water is left to be evaporated by sun and wind. Quite a painstaking process, harvesting salt this way is usually an annual activity. Also, it’s only possible in areas that have high evaporation rates and low annual rainfall, such as in Mediterranean countries.
